Public toilet replacement

Wellington Shire Council will replace the existing public toilet, located at the Port Albert Water Tower with funding provided by the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Council is seeking community feedback on the preferred facade design of the new toilet block - more information below.

Please vote here

Background

Constructed more than 30 years ago, the current public toilets at Port Albert's Water Tower has reached the end of its useful life and is need of replacement to ensure that it meets design and accessibility standards. The public toilet replacement project will replace the aged facility, improve accessibility and public safety.

The replacement public toilets will be constructed on the same site and will be orientated towards the boardwalk and water to block inclement weather, while improving access from the nearby car park and for pedestrians using the boardwalk. A new path will be constructed, improving accessibility between the board walk and car parking facilities. Additional seating and minor landscaping will be included in the project.

The current facility has six separate cubicles (three female, two male and disabled) and a common area urinal. The common area within the toilet is no longer appropriate and creates a safety concern for users. The replacement facility has been designed to address safety risks by having all cubicles opening to the active area. The floor plan below is in line with other major visitation precincts with seven cubicles (three female, three male and one disabled) planned for the replacement.

Concepts

Following a site assessment and inspections of similar facilities, architects developed the following facade design options for the community to decide.

OPTION 1 – Contemporary Style

Designer's notes

  • Skillion roof - allowing increased light and improved ventilation
  • Weatherboard look - durable compressed sheet cladding
  • Blockwork feature wall - to provide a contrasting material to the weatherboard cladding to withstand the southerly weather

OPTION 2 – Beach Style

Designer's notes

  • Bathing box style – designed to tie in with the coastal location and heritage style
  • Weatherboard look - durable compressed sheet cladding to provide a weatherboard look
  • Rock feature wall - to provide a contrasting material to the weatherboard cladding and to tie in with the sea-wall
