The proposed LED lighting and hardcourt redevelopment will provide the community with safer facilities, in line with sporting code.
Background
The proposed lighting upgrade will involve removal of the existing light towers (including metal halide light fixtures). The new proposed towers will be 18.3 meters tall and include LED light fixtures. The new towers and LED fixtures will improve lighting on the courts and reduce lighting spill for neighbours. The hardcourt redevelopment will involve replacing the 4 plexipave hardcourts to three synthetic grass courts and include four new hotshots/pickleball courts.
The overall objective of the project is to provide a safe, sustainable and compliant LED lighting and court surface. This will allow for the new surface and entire playing area to be used for multi-purpose activities to service the current tennis club members and wider community through both tennis and complementary formats.
Council's number one priority in the 2021-25 Council Plan is Climate Change, with the goal to create a climate resilient community with sustainable practices and places. The use of LED globes will assist with this priority and at the same time reduce running costs for users and groups.
Please see the image below of new LED lights at Cowwarr Recreation Reserve, installed in August 2021. "The LED lighting technology is quite amazing. The residual glow from the lights is really insignificant and our electrical bills have been reduced by about 40%, we are very happy with the new lighting" - Garry Blair, Cowwarr Recreation Reserve committee.
