The Prince Street reserve was identified in Council’s Public Open Space Plan as needing a master plan. This project will:
- Create a clear long‑term vision for the reserve
- Improve recreation, accessibility and heritage values
- Respond to the needs of the local community and visitors
The master plan will be shaped through strong community and stakeholder engagement, ensuring local knowledge and priorities guide future upgrades. The final plan will include practical, staged actions and costings to help secure future funding and support a vibrant, well‑used reserve that aligns with Council’s broader goals for creating local environments that support physical activity.
Prince Street Reserve is an important open space in the heart of Rosedale, located along the highway and used by both locals and visitors. The 1.2‑hectare reserve includes a play space, skate park, public toilets, BBQ shelter, the Rosedale Old School building, public art and the Cenotaph. It also hosts regular community activities such as markets and memorial services, supporting local businesses and contributing to Rosedale’s sense of place.
Although well used, the reserve still reflects its past as a former school site and offers limited diversity for a district‑level open space. The Master Plan will help guide improvements so the reserve can better meet current and future community needs.
The plan aims to:
- Increase physical recreation opportunities for young people (5–25 years)
- Improve activation opportunities for female users.
- Upgrade the reserve in line with Council’s Public Open Space Plan 2014–2024
- Support and expand existing community activation (markets, events, RSL activities)
- Document a clear vision, actions, and costed implementation plan to attract funding
The project must align with:
- Future Wellington 2041 Vision - inclusive, connected communities; economic innovation; environmental stewardship; youth participation; cultural heritage; transparency and engagement
- Council Plan 2025-2029 - Healthy Connected Communities, Dynamic and Diverse Economy, Infrastructure/Places/Spaces, Natural Environment
- Public Open Space Strategy 2014-2024 & 2026-2036 - enhancing accessibility, quality, and environmental resilience
- Live Well in Wellington 2025-2029 - Healthy and Active: Creating local environments and opportunities that support healthy eating and physical activity
