Our Culture, Our Place

Our Culture is about who we are and what is important to us.

It's also about Our Place and how the Arts help us to Discover, Create, Share, Enjoy and Preserve that Culture

Our Culture, Our Place is an opportunity for the Wellington community to talk about how broadly we think about the arts and our culture. We are all, in some way involved in our own culture, whether as an individual, family, social, religious, arts, library or sporting group.

This engagement is about your culture and how it is preserved, created, promoted and participated in.

As part of our arts and culture engagement work, we will be constantly checking back with you for further advice and feedback, so that you can continue to help lead Our Culture, Our Place.

Background

Wellington Shire Council is asking the community some important questions about our culture and how we create that culture.

Culture is broader than we think and is always shifting because of the changes within and outside our community. Culture is about what is important to us and how we express that to our families, friends and other people in our community. Culture is how we discover, create, share, protect and enjoy that sense of who we are.

Culture is not just about physical spaces likes art galleries and theatres (although we do have some of the best facilities in regional Victoria!). It is about all the activities that we do as groups, families or individuals, which we share with people with the same interests or background. It might be a car club, a local footy club, a walking or parents' group, book club, a group of creatives or an Aboriginal dance group. Culture can also be for people with the same heritage or lifestyle or those from the same town, region or workplace. When we put all of this together, we get a better idea of Our Culture, Our Place.

How to be involved

We'll be sharing a number of surveys over the next little while and would love to receive your feedback. Additional discussion and Q&A tools will be made available here as we move through this engagement process. You can also access hard copy surveys at Customer Service Centres in Sale and Yarram, and Wellington library branches in Yarram, Heyfield, Maffra, Stratford, Rosedale and Sale.

Meetings for different cultural groups and pop-up engagement opportunities will be announced soon.

What we hope to do

Council wishes to identify the important activities that make up the broad, diverse Wellington culture and help you express your culture in a positive and enjoyable way. This engagement work is considerable and will be ongoing. It will grow and be shaped by the diverse cultural groups that exist within our community.

What happens next?

Once you have provided your feedback using all or some of the tools provided, we will collate, review and analyse the feedback received and provide you with a summary/report on what we heard and how we are using your input, comments and ideas.
