Lion's Park Draft Master Plan - Have Your Say!
Wellington Shire Council is asking the community to share feedback on the Draft Master Plan for Lion’s Park in Sale. This plan will shape Lion’s Park now and into the future. The first round of feedback included the importance of inclusive spaces for young women and girls, given the drop-off in girls’ and women’s participation in sports and recreation. Stage 1 of the plan aims to help address that.
Your feedback will help to:
- Make Lion’s Park more active with welcoming inclusive spaces, especially for young women and girls
- Encourage more people to enjoy physical activity
- Shape the first stage of the project and guide funding applications
- Make sure the park meets current and future community needs
How to get involved?
- Complete the online survey by Friday 24 April 2026
- Ask a question email or phone via customer service to speak to Liam Cole - Open Space Planner

With the Victorian State Government election commitment of $350,000, planning has started through the development of the Lion's Park Master Plan. After the Master Plan is finalised, Council will apply to Sport & Recreation Victoria for the $350,000 election commitment to construct Stage 1.
Any future stages of the plan will depend on funding in later years.

This Master Plan aims to:
- Capture the community’s vision
- Guide future investment at Lions Park in Sale
- Support an application to Sport & Recreation Victoria for funding to build Stage 1
Council has engaged award winning Landscape Architects, PLAYCE, to undertake extensive community consultation to prepare a Master Plan for Lions Park.
While a number of Athletic Clubs are active users of the reserve, the development of a Master Plan presents an opportunity for community to reimagine Lions Park looking to the future.
The Master Plan will provide a clear, coordinated guide for the future of Lion's Park. It will set out a long‑term vision to make sure any upgrades or projects reflect community needs, protect the environment, manage stormwater well, and follow best‑practice design for public open spaces.
This project will help ensure that Lions Park continues to support the community’s health, wellbeing, and lifestyle. The Master Plan will also outline a staged approach to improvements, making sure the park remains valuable for both current and future generations.
The first stage of the project will focus on creating welcoming spaces along the Dawson Street frontage of Lions Park, with an emphasis on encouraging recreation for young girls.
New chill‑out zones may include:
- Shaded areas using either shelters or natural shade from existing trees
- A variety of seating options to support both relaxation and interactive use
- A mix of native plant species that provide year‑round interest
- Clear sightlines to support passive surveillance and safety
- A new gravel path along the front of the reserve, starting from the park’s south‑east corner
- Subject to Victorian State Government funding, lighting may be introduced to support greater use of the park before sunrise and after dusk
- Consultation on the draft plan closes on Friday 24 April 2026, after which, Council will work with PLAYCE to review the responses and, where practicable, incorporate changes to the final Lions Park Master Plan
- Once completed, Council will apply for the $350,000 election commitment through Sport & Recreation Victoria in order to construct Stage 1 and the Social Spaces along the Dawson Street frontage
- If successful, it is anticipated construction to commence in the first half of 2027
- Any further work in delivering the complete Lions Park Master Plan will be reliant upon funding in future years
