The development of the Great Southern Rail Trail Master Plan will guide and support future investment in infrastructure along the Council managed section of the rail trail that enhances the journey, encourages greater activation, and promotes the region as a destination.

The Master Plan will also identify opportunities to support community groups and local business to contribute to the Great Southern Rail Trail.

Winding through some of Victoria’s most scenic and productive landscapes, the Great Southern Rail Trail is more than a shared path - it’s a living link between towns, history and nature.

Following the construction of the Tarra Trail as a connection between Port Albert and Yarram, recent investment has seen the connection made from Alberton to Port Welshpool, creating a 141km journey stretching from Nyora through to Yarram.

The Great Southern Rail Trail presents an opportunity for local community to embrace cycle-tourism and create a welcoming experience, showcasing what the region has to offer.

In developing The Great Southern Rail Trail Master Plan, Wellington Shire will work with the community and business groups of Yarram, Alberton and Port Albert to set a clear and coordinated vision to guide the Trail’s future - balancing growing community use with environmental stewardship, tourism opportunities and long-term asset management.

By building on the Trail’s unique character and local identity, the Master Plan will help ensure the Rail Trail continues to support healthy lifestyles, regional connection, and economic vitality for generations to come.

The project must align with:

  • Future Wellington 2041 Vision - inclusive, connected communities; economic innovation; environmental stewardship; youth participation; cultural heritage; transparency and engagement
  • Council Plan 2025-2029 - Healthy Connected Communities, Dynamic and Diverse Economy, Infrastructure/Places/Spaces, Natural Environment
  • Public Open Space Strategy 2014-2024 & 2026-2036 - enhancing accessibility, quality, and environmental resilience
  • Live Well in Wellington 2025-2029 - Healthy and Active: Creating local environments and opportunities that support healthy eating and physical activity
