Help us grow the urban forest in Rosedale!

The urban forest is an important asset to any town. Council’s long-term vision and strategy for trees in each of our towns is that each has its own unique greening plan that will enhance the town's character.

Greening Rosedale will look to create a long-term sustainable vision for the character and amenity of Rosedale by having a plan to establish and maintain the urban forest for the next 50 years.

We are inviting eligible property owners to tell us which tree(s) from the preferred species list they would like planted on the nature strip abutting their property.

If you do not mind which of the preferred tree species is planted on the nature strip in front of your property, or if we do not receive your completed nomination by Friday 21 October 2022, Council officers will select a tree on your behalf.

Please use the map below to search for your address and if you're eligible, for a new tree. Use the link provided to access the Greening Rosedale survey and chose a tree from the list provided.

SIGNIFICANT TREES AND ESTABLISHED AVENUES

Some streets are not included for selection in the plan. These streets are major roads and entrances to Rosedale or have an existing theme that Council intend to enhance.

Prince Street

Several years ago following community consultation, Prince Street was planted with Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’. In the last 12 months these trees have put on an amazing display of autumnal colour.

Future plantings along this road will be continued with the same tree species to provide a consistent theme.

Duke Street

As part of the assessments undertaken by a consulting arborist, they identified that a removal of a tree/stump is required and that there is opportunity for two trees to be planted.

In order to maintain the theme of Duke Street (opposite the Rosedale Recreation Reserve) Council will plant two Corymbia maculata (Spotted Gum) as part of Greening Rosedale.

Lyon Street

From Rosedale-Longford Road to Mill Lane, there is an opportunity to enhance the amenity of the busy town entry.

As a major arterial road, Council has selected Pyrus chanticleer as the preferred tree species to create an avenue. This tree is suitable for the narrow nature strip, overhead powerlines and will compliment the exotic species in the median strip.

Cansick Street

Cansick Street has a row of Ash trees already in place along the northern side of the street that are regularly pruned by AusNet to maintain clearances around the electrical lines. While it is not proposed to remove existing trees as part of these works, the plan will be that should trees be removed into the future, they will be replaced with the species selected by Council as part of these works.

Given the challenges with existing powerlines, Council officers have selected two tree species for Cansick Street.

On the southern side (odd house numbers), where there are no powerlines, Council will plant Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’ and on the northern side will be Fraxinus ornus (Manna Ash).

TREE REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT

Council engaged an external consulting arborist to assist in tree evaluations. The consultant recently inspected all streets included in this plan and has determined that a small number of trees will need to be removed and replaced. These trees have been evaluated as either dead, dying, diseased or trees with only a short useful life expectancy.

It is not expected that any further street trees will be removed as part of this plan. Should you have a question about a specific tree, please contact Council's Open Space Arborist on 1300 366 244 to discuss.

DROP-IN SESSIONS

Drop-in sessions will be held at the Rosedale Library (Cansick Street) from 1pm to 6pm on Thursday 6 October 2022 and Saturday 8 October 2022 between 10am and midday. Please attend if you would like to speak to staff about Greening Rosedale or select a tree.

NEXT STEPS

Consultation for Greening Rosedale is open until FRIDAY 21 OCTOBER 2022. Following this Council officers will collate the responses and order the trees as selected by you.

Council's aim is to plant 100% of nature strips, if you do not mind what is planted out the front of your property, or you do not respond to this consultation process, Council officers will select a suitable species on your behalf.

Council’s annual tree planting program commences in May 2023 and will run through to September 2023. While no specific date can be provided, trees selected for Rosedale will be planted during this period.

Once planted, Council will regularly water the trees for an establishment period of at least three years which will give them every opportunity to flourish.

To further aid tree growth we encourage residents to provide additional water through summer.
