HELP US PLAN(T) FOR THE FUTURE

Following on from discussions and engagement with residents, Council have tallied the responses received and compiled the planting list for the 540 street and park trees to be planted as part of the first year of Greening Stratford. The planting of these trees, a symbol of commitment to the environment, is set to soon!

Some interesting statistics from consultation:

  • Of the 540 trees to be planted, 71% are native species
  • 75 individual species
  • 106 trees will be planted as part of the Living Labs program they include
    1. Ficus platypoda – Desert Fig
    2. Corymbia maculata ‘Gamai’ – Dwarf Spotted Gum
    3. Eucalyptus woodwardia x torquata – Torwood Gum
    4. Eucalyptus robusta ‘Matong’ – Beakpod Eucalyptus
    5. Nyssa sylvatica ‘NXSXF Forum – Tulepo
    6. Betula nigra ‘Dura Heat’ – River Birch

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

The process began with community consultations, where Stratford's residents actively participated in shaping the vision for a greener neighbourhood. The feedback received was instrumental in determining the species planted on nature strips abutting property.

The Results

Where no responses were received by the end of the consultation period, Council’s Natural Environment and Parks Team meticulously selected a diverse range of tree species suitable for the local climate, taking into account:

  • Soil conditions
  • Nature strip widths
  • Overhead powerlines
  • Character of the neighbourhood (existing avenues of trees)
  • Footpaths

Council staff inspected and mapped the planting locations, taking into account overhead powerlines, second entrances to back yards, widths of nature strips and distances from intersections.

By using the map below, Stratford residents can search for their property to see what is being planted out the front of their place.

PROACTIVE TREE WORKS

Council have engaged contractors to undertake proactive tree works within this area of Stratford. Works have commenced on identified trees following an audit undertaken by an external Consulting Arborist.

It is not expected that any further street trees will be removed as part of this plan. Should you have a question about a specific tree, please contact Council's Open Space Arborist on 1300 366 244 to discuss.

COMING SOON

Council will start preparing for further consultation with ratepayers for our 2025 Urban Forest Renewal Program and completing the extensive tree planting program in Stratford.

Letters will be sent to every ratepayer inviting them to participate in selecting trees for nature strips in front of their property.

NEXT STEPS

Once planted, Council will regularly water the trees for an establishment period of at least three years which will give them every opportunity to flourish.

To further aid tree growth, we encourage residents to provide additional water through the drier months.

The trees will be captured in Forestree – Council’s tree management software. Through Forestree, Council will be able to track inspection of trees, and coordinate works.
