Background

Young people play a critical role in disaster recovery and preparedness for our local communities.

The purpose of I Care will be to share how young people care about emergencies, and how they get involved. The campaign will share stories and experiences of young people in Wellington Shire to promote opportunities to volunteer and work in spaces that support community, before, during and after emergencies.

The aim of the I Care project is to:

1. Shine a light on the great work young people are doing in our communities in this space.
2. Increase awareness on the ways that young people can be involved in emergency services.

Young people aged 12-25 who are involved in these services, and who live in Wellington, are encouraged to contact our Future Proof team.

For more information, please contact Council's Youth Project Officer - Future Proof, Kiah Shadlow, on 0499 806 517 or KiahS@wellington.vic.gov.au

Who can get involved?

  • People aged 12-25 who volunteer, live or are employed within their community in Wellington Shire Council. This could also include a group of young people who want to be a part of the campaign together!

What are you getting involved in?

This Campaign includes an invitation to be interviewed by the Future Proof Team at Wellington Shire Council about your experiences.

The team will ask you questions about getting involved in your community, how you got involved, what lead you to getting involved and why are you still involved.

The Future Proof team would require you to be on site at the interview location for an hour and a half session, where you will be interviewed by a member of the Future Proof team whilst a videographer captures the interview. Each young person will be entitled to a $60 loaded visa card as reimbursement for their time.

Each young person who is interviewed will be invited to an Introduction and Planning Workshop in Sale where you will be introduced to the I Care Campaign and have the opportunity to provide your input in the interview process.

The workshop will be an opportunity to get to know the Future Proof team and ask any questions you may have.

What will you get out of being involved?

  • An opportunity to share your ideas, knowledge, and experience of living in your community.
  • Paid participation in the workshop and the filming of the interviews.
  • Share your ideas about how young people want to contribute to preparing and recovering from emergencies.
  • Expand your skills and experience.
  • An invitation to attend our Celebration event, where young people will be invited to share their experience in the Future Proof team. We will screen the interviews and provide food to celebrate all the young people involved in the Future Proof Team!
