Planning towards a multipurpose court redevelopment and LED lighting upgrade at Boisdale Recreation Reserve

Wellington Shire Council is engaging with residents that surround the Boisdale Recreation Reserve, as we prepare to apply for State Government funding to support this project. The proposed multipurpose court redevelopment and LED lighting upgrade will provide the community with additional passive recreation space and safer facilities, in line with sporting code guidelines.

Background

The current training and Club competition netball court and fencing was constructed in the 1960s and was initially line-marked with two tennis courts.

  • Around 20 years ago, the courts were extended with a concrete pad and asphalt resurface, lines were marked for netball and metal halide lighting was installed.
  • In 2014, the Club constructed a netball change facility that was later fitted out with additional storage, privacy walls and a kitchenette.
  • In 2021, the metal halide lighting was replaced by the Club with non-sport specific LED fixtures on the existing poles.

The redevelopment will ensure a safe and compliant court surface and modern lighting that meets Netball Victoria compliance specifications and the Netball Australia Facilities Policy. It will reduce risk of injury and enhance safety for participants.

By modernising the court surface and adding multipurpose capability, the project will encourage more women, girls and community members to participate in sport.

The lighting upgrade will involve the removal of the existing light towers that are approximately 8 meters tall. The new proposed towers will be 12 meters and include LED light fixtures. The new towers and LED fixtures will improve lighting across the multipurpose courts and reduce lighting spill for neighbours.
